It sits between no-code and code: most steps are configured visually, but you can drop into JavaScript or Python, call arbitrary HTTP endpoints and build AI agent workflows when the built-in integrations are not enough.
It appeals to technical teams and developers who want more control than typical no-code tools, including the option to run it on their own infrastructure. The source code is public, but it is released under n8n’s Sustainable Use License, a “fair-code” licence that restricts some commercial uses, so it is not open source in the OSI sense.
The self-hosted Community Edition is free to use. n8n’s hosted cloud plans are priced in euros by execution volume, are cheaper on annual billing and can be trialled without a card. Higher tiers add features such as SSO and multiple environments.
